Harry Abels

Harry joined IAA Architecten from Witt & Van Well in 1994 becoming Managing Director of their Enschede office the following year.  The company’s success led to him establishing a second office in Amsterdam in 2000 for which he has been Managing Director to the present day.  He has increased the practice’s design reputation winning numerous awards for projects in all sectors from education to transport.

Having studied Human Geography at the University of Amsterdam, Harry qualified with a Bachelor of Engineering degree before also qualifying with a Master’s Degree in Architecture, both from Delft University of Technology.  Harry’s technical expertise has led to a focus on Infrastructure and Medical projects.  He has lectured widely on design for both sectors and was responsible for a Masterclass in evidence based design in intensive care units for the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam.

He founded the Architectural Centre Twente on 1999 acting as its Chairman for seven years before becoming an active member of its Board to the present day.  He is also on the Board of the Faculty of Space and Design at Saxion College, and a Member of the Research Group of the Dutch Architects’ Organisation, BNA.
