The structure is deceptively light, with feet that appear to barely touch the surface of the water, but it is capable of taking full A-Road loads. Crash protection is provided by a system of purpose designed bollards and balustrades which enable almost uninterrupted views to and from the nearby water meadow.

Use of this busy route was maintained throughout the construction period, with each complete side of the bridge being erected within a single weekend. The bridge has a design life of 120 years, and requires minimal maintenance.

The materials were carefully selected to respond to the stone and colours of Sudbury, whilst ensuring they would not pollute the River Stour.
